Smelling of elephants

The elephant has 2 nostrils when the elephant smells, the smell will pass through the breathing tube into the nasal cavity. The inside of the nasal cavity has a cartilaginous structure which is branched out, and many olfactory cells will send the smell signal to their brain.

The nerve of smelling affects the way of life of elephants because the smell could help elephants remember the water and food sources. Moreover, elephants can smell water sources that are further than 19.2 kilometers. In addition, elephants can also distinguish the smells of the family’s urine by smelling.

We can all be a part of helping elephants. Please try to come and visit Lanta Sanctuary for a once in your life.

Thank you for your care and your support!
